Dear Parents/Guardians,
As you know, Kewaunee High School (KHS) will be implementing the
5-period trimester schedule for the 2011-12 school year. The five class periods
will last approximately 73 minutes. Since this 5-period daily schedule utilizes
a trimester yearly schedule, a 1-credit course, which previously ran for
36 weeks, will now
run for 24 weeks and a .5-credit course, which previously ran for 18 weeks,
will now run for 12 weeks. Students will take 4-5 classes
per day in the trimester schedule instead of the usual 7-8 classes per day
in the previous 8-period
semester schedule. As a result, the 5-period trimester schedule
will allow students to significantly improve their focus on daily
academic work and still complete the minimum of 26 credits
required for graduation. Furthermore,
the KHS faculty and administration firmly believe the
5-period trimester schedule will further enhance
student learning by:
creating a more personalized learning environment
providing time for diverse teaching strategies
providing opportunities for interdisciplinary instruction
increasing time on learning activities
increasing student engagement in learning activities
increasing lab/research time
providing more opportunities for various learning styles
providing more remediation opportunities
reducing student stress
improving student accountability
encouraging improved attendance
creating a more integrated curriculum
Moreover, student learning may be additionally extended since
students will probably take more elective courses throughout their
high school careers.
Please know that the faculty and administration of KHS used the
in-service days of the 2010-11 school year to diligently prepare
for providing instruction
in the longer class periods. Rest assured that the KHS faculty
is eagerly awaiting the implementation of the 5-period
trimester schedule so they can effectively provide high quality, differentiated learning experiences
for all students.
Certainly, this new schedule is an exciting opportunity for students
and teachersto achieve the core mission of the
Kewaunee School District – “unlock eachstudent’s potential,
thus allowing every student to fulfill their dreams....
by preparing them for the world of tomorrow.”
For your future reference, you will find enclosed with this newsletter a copy
of the 2011-12 KHS Class Schedules as well as a copy of
the 2011-12 Kewaunee School District Calendar.
Finally, please feel free to stop in at anytime. The faculty, staff, and
administration continue to look forward to serving each of your
sons and daughters as they further their educational career
at Kewaunee High School.
Sincerely, Mike Holtz
